About
The road of life has taken me from the volcanic deserts and farms of southern Idaho, through the rolling Kansas hills, into northern Virginia (and more recently Wilmington DE) where hardwood forests and small farms compete with shopping malls, homes, and superhighways. It was there that I opened a studio that fostered my creativity in a serious way: Second River Studio.
I named my studio for the river of creativity that runs beneath the overt river of my life. This other river is a world between worlds, arrived at through intentional solitude and creative activity. It is a wild life-giving river, mysterious, and not subject to logic as it rises, ebbs, spirals, surges, cuts through stone and spills into the soul as a refreshing waterfall. Both a nourishing psychological place and a source of energy, it also enlivens those who experience what I have created.
Like this river, I am sustained by the natural world,
It inspires my work and teaches me:
that everything and everyone are connected in a magnificent web of life
that all things in the physical world originate in the spiritual world
that these two worlds are closely entwined
that the current of energy flowing out of Earth’s soil, air, and water
sustains the circular stream of life as it passes through all beings.
As I observed the land changing radically over the years, I see connections between an altered terrain and the often absent people who transform it. For some time my focus has been on exploring this ever-changing terrain in several mediums.
